Current Plans and Increased Interest

27th July 2004 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

Hello again, currently interest in the LAN certainly seems to be picking up as word starts to get around. However its still not to a level where we feel comfortable setting a date for the LAN. Over the next few weeks we are going to be placing up more LAN party posters in more locations and will generally be more aggressive in our advertising campaign. :)  After having a good think on Doom 3 I've decided that it might be a good idea to run a cluster of Doom 3 servers since each game will be limited to a total of 4 players. This cluster should hopefully allow for 8 Doom III servers for a total of 32 players. While this means its possible only half of the attendees will be playing Doom 3 at any one time we think this is pretty good since I'd hazard a guess that many people wont have computers that can run Doom 3 (Dont forget you can always host a game or two on your own machine). Anyway if you have some opinions on this be sure to sign-up to our forums and discuss them there. Once interest picks up to a good pace we will re-roll the attendees list and then notify people to sign-up again. This should give us a good idea with-in a week of how many people really want to come. Well that's all for now!... 7 days to Doom III people! Just 7 days!

Yes We Are Still Alive

16th July 2004 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

Ok your all due an update so I'm posting this news in case people think we have disappeared. We still intend to go ahead with a LAN once we have enough interest. Sign-ups are still coming in and we've been updating the list regularly (unlike the news) but we still haven't reached the numbers we want yet. Once the current list hits 50 we are going to re-roll the entire list, contacting everyone asking them to sign-up again. "Why?" you say? well the reason being some people on the current interest list signed up almost a year ago! There is a chance that a good portion of the people on the current list have forgotten they even signed up. So once we hit 50 are going to get everyone to signup once again to prove they are still interested. We will then look at those numbers and make a decision on whether to book a venue or strive for more interest. Anyway, if your interested in coming to the LAN and want to know more just contact us by e-mail and we'll get back real quick. We really want this to go ahead.. and while we accept the first LAN will run at a loss there is only so much of a loss we can accept, which is why we must make sure we have the interest first. Now that doom 3 is nearing release (its gone gold.. yay) I'm sure we'll have dedicated servers for that too.. Over and out!

Sign-ups & Advertising

30th March 2004 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

We have finished making some advertising leaflets (posters... whatever) for the LAN and will be distributing these around universities soon. Interest has been slowly building over the last 3 - 4 months and we are receiving more and more e-mails everyday, some signing up to show interest and others asking questions. While this is great, it still isn't quite as much interest as we need. Thus the poster we have created which we are going to post around universities and gaming clubs. If you would like to help promote the LAN by putting the poster up in your place of work, school, university or gaming club (or anywhere you think would be useful) just give us an e-mail and we'll send the poster right out to you.

Another small point, since the current interest list is over 5 months old we will be resetting the list quite soon and asking people to re-confirm their interest. This is so we know they are still interested in the LAN and intend to sign-up for it if the date and time matches their schedule. If all goes well over the next few months we are looking at a November date for the LAN, hopefully at the location we almost had the LAN at last time until we cancelled, although this isn't confirmed yet (no deposit paid yet, we lost £100 just cancelling the last LAN). Well that's all for now, remember guys n gals, its up to you if this LAN goes ahead, so sign-up and help spread the word. Over and Out!

Latest Info!

5th January 2004 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

Well I suppose the website deserves a little update since its the new year. Basically we are still waiting for more interest in the LAN. I've added the few extra sign-ups that came in during the last few months. Also after the first event was cancelled we have had companies like Corsair memory and ATI show interest in sponsoring the LAN so assuming we get enough people we should be able to get some good prizes for the first LAN.  If you really want to see the LAN go ahead then please sign-up to the forums as well (not just the attendees list). We are currently looking to do the LAN around June\July\August assuming we get enough interest this time. Anyway, hope you enjoyed new year and lets hope we can get the LAN up and running this year :)

First Event Cancelled

26th September 2003 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

Due to an almost total lack of interest we have had to cancel the first event. For the people who have shown an interest don't feel too disheartened. What we are looking to do now, is put up a form of interest and start advertising around universities. Hopefully this will generate enough interest in the LAN (since advertising in the usual places on the web has done very little). Its also our fault for not giving enough time for sign-ups (most allow for around 5 - 6 months). Once the levels of interest hit a point we are happy with we will re-schedule the event and re-open proper bookings. for the moment you can just register your interest. Whoever signed up for the LAN has been automatically added to the interest list. Apologies, its a shaky start but we'll get there eventually. On a happier note I hope everyone is enjoying the TGS weekend news.

Sign-ups!

17th August 2003 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

Well signups have been coming in on a slow tickle rather than a nice downpour. Come on people, if your going to the LAN don't just sit there staring at the page. Sign up! I know some people are sitting on the fence waiting to see if other people are going to signup, unfortunately other people are also thinking that so its a vicious circle. Get to that sign-up page and make us admin happy. Unless we have enough sign-ups by the middle of October things may very well go tits up. Help advertise the LAN via your workplace/university/school, bring all your mates with you and sign-up quick so you get a bunk bed!. We aren't worried yet but the quicker people sign-up the better! Also expect some extra pictures and maybe video footage of the location in a few weeks time.

Problems with sign-up?

8th August 2003 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

I got reports that some people were having problems with the sign-up form. I knew doing a rushed html jobby would lead to trouble but my lazy ass couldn't be arsed to do it right. Basically unless you had outlook or something very similar the form just wouldn't work (also if you don't have a default mail client set in your browser nothing happens). But now the form uses some external cgi script (since my host sucks) that forwards the info to my email. This means regardless of what email client/browser setup you have you will have no problems signing up now. So sign-up already!

Some Event Changes!

4th August 2003 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

We are making a few changes to how we are handling sign-ups and the event itself. Due to some very helpful feedback we have been alerted to some possible event spoilers and we have made some changes. One major thing we forgot to mention was the fact that there is only 38 bunk beds :). First of all you'll be happy to know we have lowered the standard entrance fee to £30. However for the use of the bunk beds there will be an extra charge of £5 (£35 in total). If you so desire you can hot swap your bunk bed with a friend to save money and to help us save bunks, just make sure you specify this in the additional info box when signing up or send us an email. The starting time of the LAN has also been brought forward to 10am on the Friday instead of 4pm. Well that's all for now! Hopefully that will please everyone.

4th August 2003 (Posted by: RiGoRmOrTiS)

I really cant think of anything to say in my first news post other than to check the Current Events section and then sign-up for what promises to be a great time!. I'm sure the other Admins will want to introduce themselves eventually. In the mean time you might want to hop onto the forums and start a couple of posts to get the ball rolling! More news soon!
